Comprehensive Eye Exams

Vision correction is just the beginning of what Eyes at Bethany Village has to offer you and your family. Good eye health is much more than just being able to see clearly. Did you know that 80% of learning depends on visual skills? Dr. Paul Wehner, or "Dr. Paul" as he is warmly referred to, integrates state-of-the-art technology to provide comprehensive eye exams which include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • A thorough medical and visual history review.
  • Testing of eye motility, eye alignment, depth perception, color vision and focusing.
  • Refraction and the determination of the appropriate prescription.
  • Evaluation for Computer Vision Syndrome for computer users with symptoms.
  • Measurement of the intraocular pressures as well as other glaucoma testing.
  • Microscopic evaluation of the eyes to detect any subtle eye health problems.
  • Dilated examination of the retina and surrounding tissues, which allows us to detect early signs of many serious health problems.
  • Educating you about any visual problems and discussing treatment options and preventive measures.

A thorough eye exam will help identify such eye diseases as cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, macular degeneration and numerous other debilitating conditions. Dr. Wehner will evaluate your internal eye for detection of early stages with certain systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

At the end of each exam you will be educated on any refractive errors and eye conditions you may have using a computer animation. Dr. Wehner will also address any pertinent treatment options and all eyeglass lens options to help you understand their importance.

Eye Disease Treatment and Management

Dr. Wehner is certified by the Oregon Board of Optometry to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents for acute (ie. infections) and chronic (ie. glaucoma) eye diseases/conditions. If you notice a red eye or pain in the eyes, please contact our office immediately. We will determine the cause so that appropriate treatment can be given in a timely manner.

Contact Lens Fittings and Management

After assessing your eyes to determine if you are a good candidate for contact lenses, Dr. Wehner will perform eye measurements, a trial fitting and prescription refinements to determine the contact lens type that is the best for your eyes. This includes the best visual acuity, comfort and wearing schedule. We will then educate you on applying, removing and day-to-day care of your contact lenses.

Eyes at Bethany Village carries all major brands of soft and gas-permeable contact lenses. In addition, we prescribe specialty designed contact lenses for eye conditions such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration and irregular astigmatism.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is a procedure in which specially designed contact lenses are worn overnight. These lenses gently reshape the surface of the eye to restore clear vision and reduce dependence on eyeglasses and traditional contact lenses during all waking hours.

Lasik: Eye Surgery Consultation and Co- management

An alternative to glasses or contact lenses is LASIK eye surgery. LASIK is the most current type of corrective vision surgery performed today.

With newer technology, there are many options with respect to refractive surgery. If you are interested in surgery, we will first determine if you are a good candidate and discuss with you all of your surgical options. Should you opt for refractive surgery, Dr. Wehner will perform the necessary pre-operative tests and refer you to your surgeon of choice where you will go for the LASIK procedure. After the surgery, Dr. Wehner will co-manage your post-operative care with your surgeon. This will insure that your eyes are healing properly and that you maintain excellent vision.

To educate yourself further regarding laser eye surgery we recommend you visit www.lasik.com or www.oregonlaser.com. Please call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Wehner to answer any questions that you may have regarding your possible candidacy.

Advanced Technology

We utilize the most up-to-date technology in our office to give you the best eye care. Our exam equipment includes:

  • Digital Retinal Camera - This instrument aides in the detection, documentation and monitoring of retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
  • Corneal Topographer - Dr. Wehner uses a corneal topographer to help monitor the cornea of your eye. This helps in early detection of eye disease, contact lens fitting, and preoperative tests for LASIK patients.
  • Ultrasonic Pachymeter – An instrument used for preoperative care of LASIK patients as well as glaucoma diagnosis and management.
  • Zeiss Matrix Perimeter – Used in identifying peripheral field loss; which can be caused by glaucoma, brain lesions, strokes, and many other eye and systemic diseases.

The Finishing Touches

At the end of each exam you will be educated on any refractive errors and eye conditions you may have using a computer animation software program. Dr. Wehner will also address any pertinent treatment options and all eyeglass lens options to help you understand their importance.
